Experiment

Ignore this. I'm trying to find out if I've added a Tweet This button to the bottom of every new post. I've probably just changed the font to Dingbats, and asked everyone to ignore me.

(PS: go to TweetChat and follow LitChats, because that's the other thing I'm doing right now.)

Oooh, look, there it is! Now all I need to know is how to centre it. Anyone?

Jane, darling, how can I ignore you? It's friday evening and I have no life. Ooh, my husband is bringing me more wine - I have a life after all.

Er, btw, what "tweet this" button???

Jane Smith said...

If you click on it it sends my blog post to Twitter, apparently. Blame Victoria Strauss at Writer Beware, who has "Tweet This" buttons on ALL her posts. I haven't made mine as elegant as hers yet, but I will.

Jane, on my browser there is no "tweet this" button ...

What have you done with this litchat stuff? It was weird and I had no idea what I was doing but it's now on my blog. Why are you so fabulously technical??? Also, bloody Harry didn't bring me any whisky after all. Huh. Some friday evening.

Tweet? Careful Jane - some cats chase birds! (No, I am too old and too lazy - and I like birds.)

I'm not technical at all, I just did what Maggie Dana told me and found myself in a strange internet twittering place, which seemed to work quite well until you arrived. I think your boots must have punctured something.

I've eaten nothing tonight apart from Kettle Chips, and regret even those. My husband is better-trained than yours, as I've managed to acquire two spritzers, which went down a treat. You should move here.

(Incidentally, the plans for the motorhome hire are going along fine and we might even turn up on your doorstep one of these days. Barricade the doors.)

I can't find it either. Where is it? Not that I know anything about tweeting except the flock of hooligan chaffinches who wake me up every morning.

Firefox is having nothing to do with your button :D.

Jane, this has worked perfectly. If you look at my profile over on twitter you will see the retweet with the blog post title, and a URL that brought me straight back here. As for centring - that, I'm afraid, is WAY beyond me. I may ask, though, how you got the cool widget!!

The Tweety Button only appears if you click directly on this post's header. But over at Writer Beware (which is where I nicked it from, Dan), it appears on the blog's front page too.

I've emailed Victoria for a little help with getting it right, but might spend some more time fiddling with it in the meantime. Once I've worked out how it's meant to be done I'll laugh at you all, with your untweetable blog posts, and look smug. Again.

I saw it at the bottom of the post - didn't have to hover anywhere. And it sent me straight to my twitter where the RT appeared, with the link straight back here. so I'd say mission accomplished - I have a feeling remaining issus will be browser-related

Dan, if you want to add a similar button to your blog, here's a link for you to look at:

If you manage to get yours centred and on the front page of your blog, let me know how you did it!

And... it's gone. Any idea where I left it?

At the bottom of the comments

Jane, if I were a betting man I'd say the issue is that the line they say to insert after occurs more than once in the html, so I'm pasting the whole html into word and doing a search to test that out. It seems to have orked fine for me - except I've got two of them :-)

Leaving this comment as Aggie's shoes so you can go and take a look to see if that's where you wanted yours

Agnieszkas Shoes said...

yup, very similar lines of html occur 13 times, so that's almost certainly it

Jane Smith said...

I've got that same line of code twice in my template. I've now pasted the tweetmeme code in just below the code which seems to discuss headers, and the button is now on the blog's front page as well as on the individual post pages. But it's still wedged into that left-hand corner like a naughty boy, and I'd rather have it in the middle--it looks neater.

I shall ask over at Absolute Write, as there are some very techy members over there.

DEFINITELY a problem with the html. The stuff you get given to paste in is a bit wonky and you have to play around with it yourself. Which is always handy when your experience of html is knowing how to spell it!!

Good god, Jane - I can't work out whether to be impressed or befuddled. Go girl go - and then please come back..

Jane, dear, I don't tweet, I lost my LitChat in a nasty court case that involved stale Twinkies and choccie martinis, and, like Nicola, I have no life. Whatever am I to do if I have to ignore you? Oh...I could blame Victoria since I have nothing better to do.

I see it now. Very twitty!

Dan, the lovely Victoria Strauss has come to our rescue. If you want to centre your tweet button (and just LOOK at mine now: it's beautiful!) then all you have to do is add {center} immediately before the code and {/center} immediately after it, only replace those fancy brackets with these pointy, triangular ones ><. Note the American spelling too: it appears that HTML doesn't like proper English spelling.
