It's come at an interesting time for me because recently I came across a writer who was utterly "had", after not realising that this "lovely, kind publisher" was not a publisher at all but a vanity press after his money with no explanation of how he was going to earn a sou from his work.

Very clear explanation of how to identify the scams. Well done! I actually haven't heard of the TV scam mentioned, although someone once tried on the 'I've no money but I'll leave my valuable work tools with you' one.

A lot of this advice has been said before but it must be repeated again and again on a regular basis until it sinks in with people. The scammers repeat themselves over and over so fire has to be fought with fire.

Olivia Ryan said...
"Vanity has nothing to do with the natural desire for a writer to see his/her work in print."

Olivia, I think that's the definition of vanity publishing.JP_Fifehttp://www.shadwodevil.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5519912440753252776.post-66211601680775627402009-06-04T15:34:18.956+01:002009-06-04T15:34:18.956+01:00I've just discovered this blog and I'm fin...I've just discovered this blog and I'm finding it very interesting. As a novelist lucky enough to have been published by a mainstream publisher, I agree that it shouldn't be necessary for authors to have to pay for their work to be published. However, I have tremendous sympathy for those who feel driven to do so. Finding a publisher becomes more difficult every year, and there's no guarantee that if you've written something publishable it will in fact ever be published - unless you resort to self-publishing. That's why I hate the term 'vanity publishing'. Vanity has nothing to do with the natural desire for a writer to see his/her work in print.

This is where sites like 'Predators and Editors'come into their own, in warning writers which companies etc to avoid. Am I right in thinking, though, that the site mainly seems to deal with US publishers and agents?

Interesting blog - will be back!Sheila Nortonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13997206301877289623noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5519912440753252776.post-74111170618770108742009-06-04T10:45:15.041+01:002009-06-04T10:45:15.041+01:00Preditors and editors is fantastic, and this is fu...Preditors and editors is fantastic, and this is full of useful info. It is certainly necessary to be wary. But there are some reputable editorial services and some genuine self-publishing organisations - not everything that charges is a scam.

I'd take issue with the point about not trusting a publisher that doesn't allow online browsing. In the UK, many publishers are still not very tech-savvy and they haven't enabled this because they don't think it's important or they don't know how to do it. It might be more of a red flag with US publishers, but in the UK it's not a big deal. You can't browse Penguin Classics, for example, but that shouldn't make you distrust Penguin!Stroppy Authorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16560035800075465845noreply@blogger.com
